Case Summary
Background
Samuel Lee Ivery was identified as a drifter who had been recently released from a California mental facility. Mental health experts diagnosed Ivery as a paranoid schizophrenic.
Ivery was also suspected of two similar slayings in July 1992 in East St. Louis, Illinois.
The offence
On Aug. 15, 1992, Debra Lewis, a 27-year-old single mother, was working at a convenience store in Mobile, Ala. Ivery decapitated Lewis’ head before robbing the store.

Ivery’s stated or described motive was "PC-nonspecific." The described modus operandi was "Ninja of God"; beheaded females age 17-27.
