Case overview

Misao Katagiri (片桐操 , Katagiri Misao , April 15, 1947 – July 21, 1972) carried out the Zama and Shibuya shootings as a double spree in Japan on July 29, 1965. The attacks left one police officer dead and 17 people injured. Katagiri was captured by police officers and was later executed by Japan.

Background

Katagiri was born in Setagaya, Tokyo. He reportedly loved guns.

The offence

On July 29, 1965, Katagiri shot dead one policeman and injured another with a rifle in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture. He stole a handgun and hijacked four cars.

In Shibuya, Tokyo, Katagiri entered a gun shop near the Shibuya fire station and took four hostages. This resulted in a gun battle with police. During the gunfight, he injured 16 people.

Investigation and capture

About 5,000 people, including Norio Nagayama, witnessed the gunfight. One hostage attacked Katagiri, and police officers eventually captured him.

Trial and sentencing

Katagiri was sentenced to death.

Outcome

Katagiri was executed on July 21, 1972.

Aftermath

Katagiri was featured as one of 13 condemned criminals on Kimiko Otsuka's book Shikeishū no Saigo no Shunkan ( 死刑囚の最後の瞬間 , lit. "The Last Moment of Condemned Criminals"). The book was released as a bunkobon by Kadokawa Shoten in June 1996, though it was originally released as Ano Shikeishū no Saigo no Shunkan ( あの死刑囚の最後の瞬間 , lit. "The Last Moment of Those Condemned Criminals") in February 1992.
