Shi Yuejun (b. 1970 in Liuhe, China - d. December 20, 2006 in Tonghua, China) was a Chinese serial killer.
The offence
Between September 24, 2006 and September 29, 2006, Shi Yuejun murdered 12 people and wounded four in Tonghua, Jilin Province. A court sentenced him for murdering 12 of his customers and wounding five others. Shi committed the murders from Sept. 24 to Sept. 29 in a series of knifings that occurred in or around Liunan Township. Police alleged that he was responsible for killing eight people and seriously injuring three last Sunday in Tonghua and Liuhe counties. Police also alleged that he killed five people and injured one more while trying to evade capture.
Investigation
Police in Northeast China's Jilin Province arrested a 37-year-old man accused of killing 13 people and injuring four others. Following a six-day manhunt, Shi Yuejun, described as a butcher from Tonghua in Jilin Province, was caught in a cornfield in the outskirts of Liunan Town. A total of 14,000 people, including 2,000 police, were involved in the hunt for Shi. Police offered no motive for Shi's alleged killing spree, but local people said that he had a history of psychological problems. The Ministry of Public Security issued a Class-A warrant for Shi, offering a reward of 100,000 yuan (US$12,500).
Arrest
On September 29, 2006, Shi Yuejun was arrested.
Trial and sentencing
On November 26, 2006, Shi Yuejun was sentenced to death. A court in the northeast sentenced Shi to death by an intermediate court in Tonghua, Jilin Province. The Legal Daily reported that he was sentenced to death by an intermediate court in Tonghua, Jilin Province on Saturday. A report also states: "China Court sentences butcher Monday, Nov 27, 2006 - Taipei Times". It further states: "A court in the northeast has sentenced to death a local butcher convicted of murdering 12 of his customers and wounding five others, state press reported Sunday." It also states that Shi was sentenced to death by an intermediate court in Tonghua, Jilin Province on Saturday, the Legal Daily reported.
Outcome
Shi was executed on December 20, 2006. Shi described his motive as "revenge by the humiliations that he suffered by the society".
